Square Enix announced today at the Game Developers Conference that they will release Final Fantasy IV: The After Years and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord for WiiWare and that the classic Final Fantasy games will be released on the Virtual Console.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is the sequel to Final Fantasy IV, which was released on mobile phone in 2008 and has already been downloaded over 3 million times.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord is the sequel to FinalFantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Kingwhich was released for the WiiWare in 2008.

After many remakes on other consoles, the classic Final Fantasy games can soon also be played on the Wii Virtual Console. Only the Japanese release has been announced, which will take place in May 2009.

Square Enix has offered 84.3 million pounds ($120 million USD / €93.5 million EUR) to acquire Eidos. The offer has been accepted by the board, but not yet by the stockholders.

Eidos is responsible for the Tomb Raider series, which has been successfull in the part. Only the sales of the last game of the series, Tomb Raider: Underworld, were much worser than expected.

If you're wondering what Eidos has to do with Square: in the past they released the PC version of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII.

The takeover fits in a recently released strategy to aim more to the West.

Square Enix

It looks like Square Enix wants to get stronger in the Western market. They have make a bid at Eidos, the company famous for its Lara Croft franchise.

Square Enix is not the only company who wants to get a hold of Eidos. Warner Bros already owns 20% of the company and Electronic Arts and Ubisoft are also interested in SCi, the current owner of Eidos.

Square Enix is currently building a new studio in Los Angelos (El Segundo) where they want to develop an action-oriented game. According to their careers section they are searching for a Senior Software Engineer, Software Engineer, Product Manager, Associate Product Manager, Quality Assurance Tester and a Quality Assurance Translator. The Senior Software Engineer has to have experience with the Xbox 360 especially, so properly the game will be developed for that console.

Previous week Square Enix has offered to buy Tecmo, the creators of the Dead or Alive series and Ninja Gaiden. It would be a friendly takeover to strengthen themselves against larger overseas companies. However today Tecmo has declined the offer. Reason they gave is that they want to merge with Koei instead to boost the coporate value.

At the Microsoft press conference Square Enix has also announced that The Last Remnant will be released on Xbox 360 worldwide at 20 November 2008. The game will also be released on PC. Yoichi Wada showed the addience a new short trailer of the game.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope will be released on the Xbox 360 at Spring 2009. No new details were announced during the press conference.

Infinite Undiscovery
is a Xbox 360 exclusive game and will be released in North America at 2 September, in Europe at 5 September and in Japan at 11 September.

Let's hope Sony also has some interesting news to tell us tomorrow.
