Today, Phil Rogers, CEO for Square Enix in America and Europe has posted the following note on the Square Enix Blog.

Hello.

By way of introduction, my name is Phil Rogers and I’m the CEO for Square Enix in the Americas and Europe looking after our studio and publishing businesses. I think it’s clear to everyone that the games industry is rapidly changing – there are now more and more ways to play (and pay for) games. Through these and other advancements, gaming is taking a greater part of people’s time, fitting within a broad entertainment landscape which is offering greater choice, freedom and expression. As this industry evolves and changes, we have to change too.

There’s been speculation and commentary made this year about Square Enix’s strategy in the Americas and Europe, and I know we’ve not outwardly commented or addressed this, so some folk may be confused about what we’re actually doing – therefore I want to try and explain directly to you here on our Square Enix blog.

Luminous Studio

First and foremost, we are a games company and today we devote most of our time and effort into developing new and rich gameplay experiences, worlds and characters. At the same time new business models have risen up, which we periodically will try to explore. I know this can be frustrating for some long-time fans of our games, particularly if it seems that we’re heading in unfamiliar directions without much in the way of explanation. Explaining our approach to these opportunities is something we’re working to improve on. That said, we need to experiment and adapt or it’s likely we won’t always be in a position to keep investing in the ways we need, to build-out our games and offer excellence to you, our gamers.

I can categorically say that we’re not abandoning core, triple-A console and PC games. We’re working hard at improving how we develop our games and how we release them, and I want to explain that in a little more detail.

We’ve recently re-orientated our studio leadership to focus production expertise at the top, to allow us to ship the best quality games possible, faster and with better cost control. We’ve taken away administrative duties from studio heads, so they get closer to the games, gameplay and gamers with fewer distractions. We’ve made these changes to all of our studios in the Americas and Europe and we believe this will improve not only the quality of our games, but also improve the time between releases.

Square Enix is in production with a number of next generation projects, including Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, which were announced at this year’s E3, and Thief coming in 2014. I am also excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation Tomb Raider sequel – something you may have heard about recently!

In the future, we’ll offer gamers more choice, support more platforms and try new things – but we will make sure that whatever the platform, we’ll always keep our focus on raising the quality bar. We feel that is what gamers should expect from a Square Enix game.

I’ve spent the past few months building a senior team in the Americas and Europe to support our new and evolving strategy. We plan to share a fuller title release plan with you soon on games ranging from next-gen blockbusters (the above mentioned Tomb Raider sequel) to new cutting-edge tablet and mobile games (such as the recently released Deus Ex: The Fall), to live and online PC games (our now in beta Heroes & Generals).

You will definitely hear more soon about which games we’re working on, when you should look out for them and more frequent updates on how development is going. Please feel free to mail me your feedback. I can’t promise I’ll respond to every mail but you can be sure your concerns will be heard and taken on board.

Thanks for reading,

Phil.

The E3 2013 has ended a couple of days ago and man what an announcements have been made by Square Enix and other companies. Here's a wrap up of this years E3 with the big announcements Square Enix made.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Square Enix's total rebuild MMORPG will also be released on the PlayStation 4 in 2014. A new trailer and gameplay footage has been released and three new classes have been announced: Arcanist, Scholar and Summoner. Beta Phase 3 has just started last Friday and for the first time PlayStation 3 owners can participate.

Final Fantasy XV
Rumors were spreading for months, but it finally was officially announced at Sony's press conference. Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been renamed to Final Fantasy XV and will be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and is no longer exclusive anymore. New footage was released and at Square Enix Presents Tetsuya Nomura said that 1 to 2 years after the annoucement of Final Fantasy Versus XIII (that was back in 2006) there were long discussions of renaming the game to Final Fantasy XV, because of the scale and concept of the game.

Kingdom Hearts III
First footage was seen of Kingdom Hearts III showing a mature Sora on Destiny Islands and in Twilight Town fighting a horde of heartless. The game is in development for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Kingdom Hearts III

The moment a lot of fans have awaiting for is finally here! After the new trailer that showed that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be re-branded to Final Fantasy XV, Tetsuya Nomura showed a short teaser for an upcoming title. When the Disney Interactive logo was shown everybody knew it: Kingdom Hearts III is in development for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One!

Kingdom Hearts III reunites us with a mature Sora after the events of Kingdom Hearts II. Having learned that all the conflicts surrounding “Kingdom Hearts” were a part of Master Xehanort’s master plan to cause a Keyblade War, Sora and his friends search for the seven guardians of light to combat the darkness.

While King Mickey and Riku set off in search of previous Keyblade wielders, Sora, Donald and Goofy visit various Disney worlds in search of the “Key to Return Hearts.”

Final Fantasy XV

After months of rumor it's finally official! Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been re-branded to Final Fantasy XV! During Sony's E3 press conference that was showed previous night, Tetsuya Nomura, director of the game, had a video message showing the new trailer of Final Fantasy XV and said that more game details will be announced in the upcoming days.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII was originally announced as an exclusive PlayStation 3 game back in 2006, but is not an exclusive game for the PlayStation 4 anymore. It will also be released on the Xbox One. A release date has not been announced, but according to Square Enix the game is not expected this financial year (ending 31 March 2014).

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be playable at the E3 that will start tomorrow. Just before the start Square Enix has released a new trailer of the demo that takes place in the newly revealed city of Yusnaa where Lightning is chasing Snow and is being ambushed by Lumina.

Square Enix

This Tuesday morning at 09:00 hours PDT (16:00 hours UTC) Square Enix holds a pre-E3 event that will be about the 'Future of Final Fantasy'. The available press will get some Q&A time with senior vice president Shinji Hashimoto.

It seems likely that a new Final Fantasy will be announced, which Shinji Hashimoto mentioned last February at Sony's press conference where the PlayStation 4 was announced. Or maybe finally some information about Final Fantasy Versus XIII?

Square Enix

With only 9 days to go till the E3 2013 starts in Los Angeles, Square Enix has released the first E3 update on their Square Enix Presents YouTube channel. Square Enix Presents will show exclusive announcements and presentations during the E3 and will be hosted by Megan Marie (Community Manager at Crystal Dynamics). Guests that have been announced are Naoki Yoshida (Producer Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn), Yoshinori Kitase (Producer Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII) and Motomu Toriyama (Director Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII).

Hopefully a new Final Fantasy game will be announced or finally information about Final Fantasy Versus XIII (rename to Final Fantasy XV?).

Square Enix

Square Enix has told game magazine publisher MCV that they're making redundancies to their offices in the United Kingdom and Europe. Occasion is the disappointing sales in North America and Europe that caused Yoichi Wada to step down. Games like Tomb Raider, Hitman and Sleeping Dogs has missed their targets, which were set very high by Square Enix.

We are reviewing our business in Europe to ensure we have the right structure, content and skills for the changing entertainment landscape.

We do expect changes to the UK office, which will affect personnel. We will update you when the time is right, but our priority right now is for the people within the business.

How much loss the company has suffered will be announced half May with the annual financial results.

Square Enix

The CEO of Square Enix, Yoichi Wada, has announced today that he will step down as CEO of Square Enix in late June. Yosuke Matsuda, the current Representative Director, will take his place as the new CEO. The reason for his demotion is most likely because of the forecast of 'extraordinary loss' due to slow sales of games in North America and Europe.

Yoichi Wada

Yoichi Wada joined Square in April 2000 to become the new executive director and CFO in June 2000. After the merge with Enix he became the company's new President and Representative Director.

Yosuke Matsuda joined Square in October 2001 as Senior Vice President and also became General Manager of Accounting and Finance after the merge with Enix in April 2003. One year later he was promoted to Director and CFO.

Today, 25 years ago on 18 December 1987, the first game in the Final Fantasy series was released on the Nintendo Famicom in Japan. What maybe was the last game for the, at that tiime, small developer Square before they went bankrupt, became one of the best selling game franchises.

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series, took his inspiration from Dragon Quest (their big rival back then), The Legend of Zelda and Ultima to create a new fantasy RPG. Should it not have sold well, he would have quit the gaming industries and return to university.
