This Tuesday morning at 09:00 hours PDT (16:00 hours UTC) Square Enix holds a pre-E3 event that will be about the 'Future of Final Fantasy'. The available press will get some Q&A time with senior vice president Shinji Hashimoto.

It seems likely that a new Final Fantasy will be announced, which Shinji Hashimoto mentioned last February at Sony's press conference where the PlayStation 4 was announced. Or maybe finally some information about Final Fantasy Versus XIII?

Square Enix has told game magazine publisher MCV that they're making redundancies to their offices in the United Kingdom and Europe. Occasion is the disappointing sales in North America and Europe that caused Yoichi Wada to step down. Games like Tomb Raider, Hitman and Sleeping Dogs has missed their targets, which were set very high by Square Enix.

We are reviewing our business in Europe to ensure we have the right structure, content and skills for the changing entertainment landscape.

We do expect changes to the UK office, which will affect personnel. We will update you when the time is right, but our priority right now is for the people within the business.

How much loss the company has suffered will be announced half May with the annual financial results.

The CEO of Square Enix, Yoichi Wada, has announced today that he will step down as CEO of Square Enix in late June. Yosuke Matsuda, the current Representative Director, will take his place as the new CEO. The reason for his demotion is most likely because of the forecast of 'extraordinary loss' due to slow sales of games in North America and Europe.

Yoichi Wada

Yoichi Wada joined Square in April 2000 to become the new executive director and CFO in June 2000. After the merge with Enix he became the company's new President and Representative Director.

Yosuke Matsuda joined Square in October 2001 as Senior Vice President and also became General Manager of Accounting and Finance after the merge with Enix in April 2003. One year later he was promoted to Director and CFO.

Today, 25 years ago on 18 December 1987, the first game in the Final Fantasy series was released on the Nintendo Famicom in Japan. What maybe was the last game for the, at that tiime, small developer Square before they went bankrupt, became one of the best selling game franchises.

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series, took his inspiration from Dragon Quest (their big rival back then), The Legend of Zelda and Ultima to create a new fantasy RPG. Should it not have sold well, he would have quit the gaming industries and return to university.
