Square Enix

Famitsu managed to score an interview with Tetsuya Nomura to ask about the process of a couple of games that are currently in development: Final Fantasy X HD, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Kingdom Hearts 3D and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy.

About Final Fantasy X HD Nomura didn't had much to say about, only that the development on the game has started.

He was more open about Final Fantasy Versus XIII, saying the following:

  • Nomura recently did the latest check of the game. The visual expression capability has improved from the trailer that was released last year.
  • The game has a mix of real time and Visual Works pre-rendered CG. The ratio is 7 real time to 3 pre rendered.
  • The scene where Noctus and Stella meet for the first time has been made into a pre-rendered scene. This is because it's an example of an area where adding player control would not have a big effect.
  • Square Enix won't be holding an event ala last year's January press conference this year. However, Nomura said that he'd like to make some sort Versus related announcement/showing this year, although he can't say when or where.
  • The next time we see Versus XIII, we will get a look at it being controlled on actual hardware.

Regarding Kingdom Hearts 3D he said that the ending of the game is unconventional to the series and that the original idea was not approved. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy will be getting a second demo.

20/01 Update: Famitsu has mentioned that Square Enix's 1st Production Department is going to develop Final Fantasy X HD.

Square Enix has announced that unknown parties has gained unauthorized access to a server related to Square Enix Members and therefore they have taken down the service in Japan and North America. Europe is not affected by the hack.

They said that it might take a few days to look into the matter and fix the security holes.

You can read the full statement below.

We have reason to believe that unknown parties may have gained unauthorized access to a particular Square Enix server related to the free SQUARE ENIX MEMBERS service offered in North America and Japan. In response, Square Enix, Inc. has temporarily suspended operation of the SQUARE ENIX MEMBERS service starting at 10PM (PST) on December 12, 2011.

We are assessing the full extent of this potential breach to determine what data, if any, was compromised and will provide more details as soon as possible. While some personal information may have been accessed, we can confirm that there is no possibility of any credit card information leak from this incident, since the server in question stores no credit card information. We estimate that the suspension will continue for a few days until we complete our investigation and counter-measures. We will update you as we learn more.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension of the SQUARE ENIX MEMBERS service. We take data security extremely seriously and we regret any inconvenience this may have caused our customers and fans. We appreciate your patience and support at this time.

Under the lead of producer Ryutaro Ichimura, Square Enix is developing a new (unique) action RPG which will be using the Unreal Engine 3. The only thing we know is that the game will not be a new Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts game and that they are currently looking for staff members.

Here's a scan from the latest Famitsu magazine showing some artwork from the game.
