Final Fantasy XIII

In an interview that Strategy Informer held with Daniel Erickson, Writing Director of BioWare (from games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Origins) they asked what his thoughts are about Final Fantasy XIII and according to him it's no RPG.

Well, before I address the main point I just want to take a slightly more controversial route: You can put a 'J' in front of it, but it's not an RPG. You don't make any choices, you don't create a character, you don't live your character... I don't know what those are - adventure games maybe? But they're not RPG's.

What are your thoughts about tbis?

Final Fantasy XIII

Since Final Fantasy XIII is only a week away from release in Japan the first review has been done by Weekly Famitsu.

One editor wrote: "The story being told is very deep and uniquely charming, not at all like FFs up to now. The battle system is innovative and has a lot of strategic elements. Being able to rewind back to just before the current battle is really nice."

The reviewers also had good things about the graphics ("without a doubt, the state of the art in story cutscenes") and the battle system: "It's built both for beginners and seasoned players. Things proceed speedily and since you're always rated, every battle has a sense of tension to it. The ability to switch Optimas instantly and use a wide variety of skills and magic simultaneously in battle is exhilarating."

Despite that, the game received a 39/40: three editors awarded the game with the perfect score, but editor Yamamoto Penki gave it a 9. He wrote "Given the quality all around, it's a bit of a shame that the story is a straight path until the midgame. I'm also concerned about the lack of [gameplay] gimmicks before the midpoint."
