SeeD is Balamb Garden's mercenary force. Students 15 years and older can participate in the written exam and field exam. They must pass both exams to become a SeeD. SeeD members are paid by the Garden according to their rank. In the Garden, their status is no different from that of the other students.

SeeD conducts missions around the world. Most missions involve battle support and undercover work. SeeD is high demand by groups requiring a small force of undercover specialists. Commissions made through such dispatches are an important part of Balamb Garden's income.

SeeD battle operations are noted for their skillful use of para-magic. Balamb Garden researches the use of GF in conjunction with para-magic. For this Balamb Garden SeeD members master the most powerful forms of para-magic.

All the actions you take in the beginning of the game have an effect on your future SeeD ranking. The SeeD test also bring up your SeeD Level.

¤ Conduct

The Dollet mission determines you Conduct score. The points are determined by how much time remains on the clock when you reach the beach during the evacuation.

¤ Judgment

Judgment is based on the Fire Cavern Event. The less time there is on the clock when you defeat Ifrit, the better the score will be.

¤ Attack

The number of enemies your party defeated during the Dollet Mission Event determines your Attack score. This number does not include enemies defeated by GF's. Even if an enemy's HP reaches zero more than once during a battle (like X-ATM092), only the first time will contribute to the total.

¤ Spirit

Your spirit rate is determined on how many times you escape from X-ATM092 during the Dollet Field Exam. The more times you escape, the lower the score. It's possible to fight X-ATM092 only once. After the initial escape at the Communications Tower, you'll run for two screens. When you reach the screen with the downwards slope, press the Triangle button to walk instead of run. This will keep the party from being stunned and avoids a second battle against X-ATM092.

¤ Attitude

Many things determine attitude:

1. The number of people you talk to during the Dollet Field Exam. There is a one point deduction per conversation. This includes talking to people in Balamb. If you talk to Biggs, you will lose two points.
2. A one point deduction is taken each time you attempt to go towards the Communications Tower before Seifer commands you to do so.
3. Each time you jump off the cliff shortcut to reach the Communications Tower (Selphie's shortcut), you receive a 5 points deduction.
4. You lose 10 points if you fail to save the dog while passing through Dollet's town square during your escape. Speak with the dog to help it escape.
5. If you run into the Cafe to escape from the X-ATM092, you lose 20 points.

Bonus: You will receive a 100 point bonus if you destroy the X-ATM092. Depending on your level, it has anywhere form 5500-6500 HP. It's only possible to destroy it on the bridge.

¤ Raising your Rank

Once you have obtained your rank it will then fluctuate depending on your actions in the field. Most of the time it will rise but it can also decrease if you make a false turn or an error of judgement. It is possible to raise your SeeD rank however by taking a written exam. These exams are simple Yes/No questions about FF8. Most of the questions are easy and each time you pass, your Seed rank will be raised by one.
