In Final Fantasy XI there's a jobsystem. When you create a new character you have to pick a job. If you don't like the job you can always switch to another jobs. When you have completed special quests other jobs will become available.

There's a Support Job too. To get this you have to complete a certain quest. Also you need to have put some time on leveling both jobs. When your main job is level 20 and you select a support job it level will be restricted to 50% of 20, so it will be level 10. A plus is that you can use the abilities of the support job, but you can't level it. You need to have it as main job then.
