» Tutorials » Uploading via FTP

If you want to start a website you need to know how to upload content. Some hosting companies have the option to upload content via the browser, but others not. Uploading via FTP is the option most hosting companies offers. But how to do it? It's simple.

First download a FTP program. I use SmartFTP for the tutorial, since it's free to use. I use it myself. You can download it from www.smartftp.com. After downloading install the program and start it up. You'll see under the menu a tab with address. In the address field you enter the FTP address. Most of the times it's ftp.yourdomain.com. But ask your host if you're not certain.
The second field is the user field. Here enter your username you got from your hosting company or that you made yourself in the control panel.
The third field is the password. Just enter the password.
That's all you need to enter, so click on "Go" (the green button with an arrow) or hit "Return". Now a window will open and the program will try to connect to the FTP. If it doesn't connect, be sure to give the program permission to connect if you have a firewall. When it's connected you'll might see some files and directories. Just leave them, they are probable system files.

Now you can start uploading your files. The easiest way is to click on the "New Browser Window" button and go to the location were you files are. Now drag the files from the local browser to the remote browser to start uploading them. To make a new folder, just hit "Ins" and give it a name.

I hope you understand this tutorial after reading this. If not or you have any further questions, please contact me.
